Reflections on Aging

“Reflections” takes place 4 times this fall on alternate Thursdays. Please join us in Collins Hall from 1:30 to 3:00 pm on October 2, 16, 30 and November 13. Reading material and refreshments are provided. Come once, twice or for all four.

Join moderators, Maureen Witney (Caring Circle) and Tina Nielsen (Bowen Librarian), in starting a conversation about aging and how we can choose to age consciously, energetically and with pride.

We are our stories. And as we age, our stories affirm who we are both for ourselves and for others. “Reflections on Aging” is a guided discussion group for us to explore the experiences of aging through our stories and those of others. Narratives will voice the highs and lows, the joys and the disappointments. How are you changing? What has been unexpected? Better than imagined? Worse?

Using a range of quotations and excerpts from essays, articles, fiction and poetry, we will explore what aging means to us and what others have experienced.

Week 1. The choice to age consciously
The “problem” of aging
Predominance of youth culture in media. Media’s influence on how we view ourselves
What’s changed for you? What’s better than expected? Worse. What’s caught you by surprise? What are your hopes? What are your fears?

Week 2. Reflecting on and reviewing your life
Kierkegaard: “Life is lived forward, but understood backwards.”

Week 3. Planning for the future you want
Social well-being – Friends/Family
Financial well-being
Health
Living situation

Week 4. On Being an Elder
Do you feel honoured and respected as an elder in our/your culture? On Bowen?
Generativity (Erik Erikson) “Responsibility to care for younger generations by giving of oneself – one’s knowledge, experience, time, resources and values”
